COVID-19 Press Release

In response to the recommendations of state and federal government to slow the spread of COVID-19, and following orders from the Supreme Court of Florida, the honorable Judge James H. Daniel has issued an administrative order in regards to the current court calendar.

In summary, this court related administrative order is essentially postponing and/or mandating the utilization of video technology in most current court cases.

Civil case types that will be conducted by telephone or video hearing:

  • Civil (CA)
  • Family Law (DR)
  • Probate (CP)
  • Guardianship (GA)
  • County Civil (CC)

**Exceptions to this include petitions for protection against domestic violence, dating violence, sexual violence, and stalking.

**All domestic violence calendars will proceed on their regularly scheduled days.                                   Note: All cases involving petitions for injunctions for protection against domestic violence, repeat violence, dating violence, sexual violence and stalking will not be administratively continued unless by specific order of the presiding judge.  No family members or witnesses will be allowed in the court room unless the presiding judge allows.

Civil case types that will be cancelled and rescheduled:

  • Small Claims (SC) cases scheduled for the weeks of March 16, 2020 and March 23, 2020 will be rescheduled.

Criminal case types that will be cancelled and rescheduled:

  • Felony criminal cases (CF) scheduled for March 19, 2020 and March 26, 2020 are cancelled and will be rescheduled.
  • Juvenile delinquency cases (CJ) scheduled for March 25 will be continued administratively.

**Exceptions to this will include defendants currently housed at the Nassau County Jail, those hearings will be conducted remotely by video conference.

  • County criminal cases (MM) scheduled for the weeks starting March 16 and March 23 are cancelled and will be rescheduled.

**Exceptions to this will include defendants currently held in the Nassau County Jail, the court will conduct those hearings remotely by video conference.

 

Specialty courts (Adult Drug Court, Mental Health Court and Veteran’s Court) are cancelled for the weeks of March 16, 2020 and March 23, 2020.

Marchman Act cases and Baker Act cases will proceed as regularly scheduled.

All dependency cases (DP) scheduled for March 20 and March 27 are continued until April 1.

Shelter cases will be conducted in court on an as-needed basis.

All Jury trials statewide have been suspended through the week of March 30.

The 4th Judicial Circuit has further suspended all civil jury trials through May 1, 2020.
